The Todaimon(\u6771\u5927\u9580) gate quietly stands to the northeast of the five-storied pagoda of Toji. Todaimon is also called \u201cAkazunomon(\u4e0d\u958b\u9580) (lit. never-opened gate)\u201d. As its name suggests, the doors of this gate are not opened except on special occasions. Do you know why?<\/p>\n

In June 1336, Ashikaga Takauji(\u8db3\u5229\u5c0a\u6c0f) managed to enter Kyoto after being defeated by Emperor Go-Daigo(\u5f8c\u918d\u9190\u5929\u7687), and established his headquarters in Toji. When he fell into a predicament during a battle in Kyoto with Nitta Yoshisada(\u65b0\u7530\u7fa9\u8c9e) and others, he had a narrow escape by firmly closing the doors of Todaimon. Small holes that are presumed to be the marks of arrows during this escape still remain on these doors.<\/p>\n

Since then, this gate has been called \u201cAkazunomon\u201d, and its doors remain firmly closed except at the time of disaster or during renovation.<\/p>\n

Another anecdote related to this battle is recorded in Toji.<\/p>\n

Item 45-4 of Box-HI(Katakana), \u201cKyoo-Gokoku-ji Sogo Daihosshi-ra Moshijo-an\u201d, dated October 1339<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A scene from the battle in Kyoto that was mentioned in the above is described in this document, starting in the 12th line (\u5c31\u4e2d\u9803\u5e74\u4ee5\u6765\u2026) from the right end of this photo (\u7387\u571f\u795e\u660e\u2026). Amazingly, it reports that the Myojin deity of Toji Chinju-Hachimangu(\u6771\u5bfa\u93ae\u5b88\u516b\u5e61\u5bae) shot arrows to ward off Yoshisada and others, backing up Takauji. Isn\u2019t this an anecdote suitable for Toji Chinju-Hachimangu, a shrine famous for the prayer for victory?<\/p>\n

Takauji had a narrow escape thanks to the protection of Toji Chinju-Hachimangu. Nawa Nagatoshi(\u540d\u548c\u9577\u5e74) a close associate of Emperor Go-Daigo died in action during this fight, but a fierce battle was still in progress. What would be his next move? Wait for the next story.<\/p>\n

\n\u203b\u5f8c\u918d\u9190\u5929\u7687(1288-1339):In 1333, the Emperor Godaigo destroy the Kamakura Shogunate, and begins new politics by the Emperor, but collapses in three years.
\n\u203b\u65b0\u7530\u7fa9\u8c9e(1300-1338):Yoshisada Nitta attacks the Kamakura Shogunate, and drive it into the extinction; is one of the central figures of establishing it ‘Kenmu no Shinsei (The new government of Emperor Godaigo)’.
\n\u203b\u540d\u548c\u9577\u5e74(?-1336):Nagatoshi Nawa met the Emperor Godaigo who got away from Oki in senjyozan mountain, and repulsed the Kamakura Shogunate forces.
